The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
