Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Action in Italy
Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled after the blast was found not long after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area revealed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents set off the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.
A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed Italian media, adding that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
